Classes
Class Types and Times
The Howick and St Heliers Judo Club has a variety of classes, at two locations, in the Eastern Suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand.
Judo provides an incredibly practical self-defense training which allows an individual to focus on controlling rather than escalating a conflict. Judo is a complete, effective training for children, women and men.
By beginning with break falls and escapes, students immediately learn techniques they could easily apply in a “real world” situation. The basic curriculum of Judo training begins with simple stretching and strengthening exercises. Next, students learn rolls and falls that allow them to be better handle the tumbles that occur. The dojo is equipped with spring-floor mats.
Classes at the Club cater for the following levels:
Beginners (all ages from 5 up)
Juniors (age 8-13)
Intermediates (age 13-18)
Seniors/Adults (age 16+)
The age ranges for each level are a guide only. While age is important in determining what class an individual is placed in, other factors that are considered are their size and ability.
Seniors/Adults Classes
Senior/Adult classes are held at the Howick Dojo each Monday and Wednesday. The only times that classes will not be held are when either day is a Public Holiday or over the Christmas/January school holiday period.
Training times are:
Monday | 8:00pm-9:30pm |
Wednesday | 8:00pm-9:30pm |
A typical class begins with a set of basic warm-up and strengthening exercises. From there, the focus of the class varies from session to session to address the full range of diverse techniques incorporated in Judo. There are often opportunities to focus on individual needs as well as practicing with the larger group. Students advance in rank at their own pace according to their abilities and efforts. As they advance, they have the opportunity to pass their knowledge along to the students who follow. The Howick and St Heliers Judo Club provides high quality traditional training in an atmosphere of camaraderie.
The instructors for the adult class are:
Lawrie Crooke – 3rd Dan black belt
Craig Bartlett – 3rd Dan black belt
Brent Cooper – 7th Dan black belt, often assists Lawrie and Craig, as do some of the other black belts in the adult class, resulting in an excellent student-instructor ratio for personalized training.
Intermediates Classes
Intermediate classes are held at the Howick Dojo each Monday and Thursday. The only times that classes are not held is when either day is a Public Holiday or over the school holiday periods.
Training times are:
Monday | 7:00pm-8:00pm |

In a typical class session, students start with warm-up exercises or games. A class may cover instruction of new techniques or revision of previously taught techniques with students able to practice them in small groups. In addition the students have the opportunity to practice Ne-waza (Groundwork) and Nage-waza (throwing techniques). Before class is over, the students usually have a chance to do Randori (free practice).
The instructor for the Intermediate classes is Lawrie Crooke (3rd Dan black belt). Lawrie is often assisted by Craig Bartlett (3rd Dan black belt) or other students from the adult class who give their time to help train the students. This provides a good student-teacher ratio for personalized instruction.
